If you have difficulty moving or are travelling with someone who is physically challenged, you can get travel advice from the Disabled People's Association of Singapore (DPA). It is a non-profit, self-help organisation advocating the equalisation of opportunities for disabled people in society. It published a dictionary of Disability Terminology - an essential guide to words and phrases acceptable to people with disabilities. For a copy, email or call +65-68991220.
What is the real secret to cheap international travel? It is the same as the secret to doing anything for less. Learn to be an opportunist. Opportunistic travelers get to travel more, see more and do more. Of course, you can ignore this advice if you have unlimited funds.
What is a hostel?
A hostel or youth hostel is essentially a form of accommodation that offers reasonably priced, shared accommodation to travellers in either private or dormitory rooms. The majority of hostels around the world are independently owned and many of these have their own bars and restaurants. If you are moving from country to country, instead of booking the hostels separately, check out Hostelworld.com It offers instant online reservations at youth hostels throughout Europe and around the world. Learn about the culture of the country before you visit it, and try not to look too much like a tourist.
When you travel somewhere forget your map and all the guide books for a while. Sometimes it's better to stroll along the streets and discover things that are not listed anywhere in the guides but nonetheless great and interesting and more fun. Visit local restaurants and bars. They are much cheaper and you can try the traditional specialisties and even meet the locals. Bring a pillow with you for those long bus journeys. Do not plan too much. You are on holidays! Also, try to have just your essential luggage, not a heavy suitcase. Get one of those thin money belts that fit inside your clothes. That way you can carry your passport and money with you at all times. Be open to everything which may happen to you. There is always something new to learn. Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA), also known as Chek Lap Kok for the island on which it is built, serves the city of Hong Kong, China, and the world. Winner of several World’s Best Airport awards by Skytrax, Hong Kong International Airport is a beautifully modern and efficient airport designed by Sir Norman Foster.
Less than five flying hours from half the world’s population, HKIA is the fifth busiest airport in the world and operates the world’s busiest cargo facilities. Direct flights from every continent arrive in HKIA, including daily flights from North America, Europe, and Oceania. The two main carriers are Cathay Pacific and its subsidiary Dragon Air. Hong Kong Express also flies into HKIA. A highly efficient and comprehensive transportation system serves the airport. The Airport Express connects HKIA Tsing Yi, Kowloon, and Hong Kong Island. This environmentally friendly system departs every 12 minutes, and takes 23 minutes to reach Hong Kong station. Once at the station, passengers may take free shuttle buses to major hotels in Kowloon or Hong Kong Island. The Airport Express Tourist Transport Pass allows for three days of unlimited MTR travel on an Octopus card. Buses also connect HKIA with most of the city. The Cityflyer bus is generally cheaper, but slower, than the train. Its E routes are cheaper than A routes, so check out all options in advance. Taxis, coaches, and limousines are also available to passengers. Red taxis are for destinations in Hong Kong Island or Kowloon. Green taxis are restricted to the New Territories. Blue taxis are for Lantau Island. Ideal for travelers intending to fly around the mainland, Shenzhen International Airport (SZX) offers a cheaper alternative to HKIA. Airline companies such as China Shenzhen Airlines, China Hainan Airlines, Air China, and China Southern Airlines run regular flights throughout China. Many hotels offer shuttle buses to the airport, and the Airport Express line and MTR area accessible from the airport. For flying elsewhere in Asia, Macau International Airport (MFM) is another cheaper alternative to HKIA. Air Asia has set up a hub at MFM, flying to destinations such as Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Viva Macau flies to Sydney. Ferry service is available to MFM from Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and HKIA. |
